Scientific Reasoning and Belief Structure

چکیده

For explaining theory change, it is important to be able to express which theory is believed to be fundamental and which theory is thought to be true. To achieve this expressive power, I propose theory of belief structures (TBS) that describes belief states not in terms of a set of sentences but by a structure. The dominant formal approach of belief revision, the AGM theory, adopts a conservative strategy. However, this does not always conform to the praxes of scientists. Contrarily, TBS admits to taking a progressive strategy and can describe different kinds of belief states. To demonstrate the descriptive power of TBS, it is applied to a description of change in astronomical theory.

Accessibility Relation and Nonmonotonic Reasoning ( Extended

By studying the accessibility relations in logics of knowledge and belief, we reveal that almost all prominent nonmonotonic reasoning semantics can be characterized in terms of standard Kripke structures by altering the accessibility relation. This result not just extends the expressive power of the Kripke structure but also clearly demonstrates that the nonmonotonic reasoning is a reasoning ab...

Scientific reasoning in a real-world context: the effect of prior belief and outcome on children's hypothesis-testing strategies.

The impact of event outcome and prior belief on scientific reasoning was investigated within a real-world oral health context. Participants (N= 144; ranging from 3 to 11 years) were given hypothesis-testing tasks and asked to explain their answers. Participants were presented with information that was either consistent or inconsistent with their own beliefs. Each task consisted of scenarios in ...

Neural correlates of true and false belief reasoning.

Belief reasoning plays a central role in making inferences about other people's mental states. The ability to reason about false beliefs is considered as a critical test for having a Theory of Mind (ToM). There is some controversy as to whether it is the medial prefrontal cortex (MPFC) or the temporo-parietal junction (TPJ) that is centrally involved in belief reasoning. According to developmen...
